3 GOP Senators Urge Supreme Court to Overturn Roe v. Wade
Missouri, Texas, Utah | July 27, 2021
Three Republican senators have filed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to return the power to make legislation concerning abortion to the states by overturning the historic 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision, The Epoch Times reported.
Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri, Mike Lee of Utah, and Ted Cruz of Texas, said in the brief on Monday that Roe v. Wade’s approach “proved controversial, and conceptually flawed, from the outset,” while the Parenthood v. Casey decision’s undue burden standard is ambiguous and has made it difficult for courts to consistently apply it, calling it “too subjective” and is “unworkable and unpredictable.”
Roe v. Wade prohibits states from banning abortions prior to when the fetus is deemed “viable,” with the ruling asserting that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion in the “pre-viability” period and that state laws dealing with abortion would have to pass the strict scrutiny standard, the highest and most stringent standard of judicial review that courts use to determine the constitutionality of laws….

Acclaim for “vital” pregnancy help as dozens of Congress members move to designate special week for recognition
Utah, Virginia | May 17, 2021
Nearly 60 members of the U.S. Congress acted this week to recognize the important work of pregnancy centers with a special decree naming a week in November to honor the centers’ life-saving work.
U.S. Representative Bob Good (VA-05) introduced a resolution Wednesday designating the week of November 8 as National Pregnancy Center Week, emphasizing the vital role that pregnancy resource centers have in helping mothers and families. The legislation is co-sponsored by 40 additional House Republicans. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced a companion resolution in the Senate, which has 17 co-sponsors.
“Pregnancy centers provide mothers a safe place to turn to as they look for help, hope, and healing during challenging times,” Good said. “These centers and the individuals who work and volunteer at them deserve to be supported and recognized for the vital role they play in helping mothers and their families. I’m proud to stand with leaders like Senator Mike Lee who are working to protect innocent life.” ..

Bill for Expectant Mothers Will Require Fathers to Pay Half of Pregnancy Costs
Utah | April 9, 2021
A Utah bill is being praised as a win for expectant mothers, including by pro-life groups. HB113, which was recently signed into law by the governor, passed with bipartisan support and requires the biological father of a preborn child to pay for half of the mother’s medical expenses during pregnancy.
Costs for prenatal care can be substantial, and according to the Guttmacher Institute, the former research arm of Planned Parenthood, finances are a major factor in a woman’s decision to have an abortion. Giving birth costs, on average, $4,500 out of pocket, although the cost can more than double for those without health insurance. HB113 can help to ensure that fathers are responsible for their children, and that women who fear they can’t afford a pregnancy do not feel forced into an abortion.
According to Utah lawmakers, this was exactly why the bill was introduced — to save lives. Sen. Dan McCray told the Salt Lake Tribune the goal was “to try and bring some equity to the funding of pregnancies and share in that burden and [to recognize] the important role that the mother and the father play in the pregnancy.”
Rep. Brady Brammer, who sponsored the bill in the Utah House, specifically framed it as a pro-life effort. “You can support pregnant moms and new babies and it doesn’t have to be about abortion,” he told the BBC, adding that at the core of the abortion issue is “someone in a really tough position in life, making a real tough decision in life. Perhaps we could make that situation a little bit easier.”…
