The effects of the generation gap that Puerto Rico is going through were strongly reflected in the Consumer Radiography 2021 study, because while the population aged 65 and over continues to increase, the monthly spending of this segment for the food industry fell this year by 19.9%.
For the president of RodzDigital, Mario Rodríguez, this change in the consumption pattern would have “huge implications” , because if they spend less, the average monthly spending of the Puerto Rican consumer would also drop.
This reduction would be added to the 6.2% that was registered this year, despite the push of federal funds due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the study commissioned to the firm Lighthouse Strategies by the Chamber of Marketing, Industry and Food Distribution (MIDA) , the average monthly expenditure this year stood at $ 407, while in 2020 it reached $ 434….
